If you plan to travel to Norway to receive medical treatment over a period of more than 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit in advance. If you need someone to accompany you, he or she can also be granted such a residence permit.

You will be granted a residence permit as a refugee – normally for five years. Your residence permit can be renewed by application.

Settlement permits are now called permanent residence permits.

Some people who apply for protection (asylum) will be granted a limited residence permit in Norway because there is doubt about their identity or because their identity has not been adequately documented.

If you stay in Norway without a valid residence permit, you must return to your home country or country where you have a residence permit. You can apply for support to return home and start a new life. This is called assisted return.

New regulations for self-sufficiency for obtaining a permanent residence permit entered into effect on 1 January 2021. The new regulations apply to new applications and applications submitted before this date that have not yet been processed.

Foreign nationals who could not return home before their permit, visa, or visa-free stay expired due to the corona situation must return home. Stays after the departure deadline may result in rejection of entry or expulsion.

If your application for a permanent residence permit or an application for a long term stay abroad has been denied, you can appeal the decision.

If you wish to stay in Norway or Schengen for more days than your visitor visa is valid for, you must apply for a visa extension. If you plan to travel in and out of Schengen an extra time, you have to apply for a new visa.

If you have a family immigration permit and have been abused by your spouse or cohabitant, you can apply for an independent residence permit.
